Behold the beauty of the swiss saber. Most two handed sabres that are shown are swiss sabres. In fact, one of my absolute favorite styles of sword is just such an arrangement.

This was a commission by instructor michael thomas for a sparring ready version of the beautiful sword hel. This model was developed and put into use by the legendary enthusiast and researcher of historical fencing alfred hatton. The fact that some swiss sabers have such guards reinforces the vulnerability of the hands in combat with long blades, where the hands/wrists are usually the most accessible target at range.
